Summer Camp Blog Tour presents Amber Kallyn

Opportunity Knocks at Marketing For Romance Writers Summer Camp. Open the door to: SEEK, TEACH, LEARN, SHARE, SUCCEED...and discover MFRW'S MOTTO of Achievement.
The Plotting Princesses welcomes Amber Kallyn who is blogging today about MFRW (Marketing for Romance Writers)

Writing tends to be a solitary endeavor. When I ‘Go to work’, it’s usually in a semi-quiet place, but alone.
Sure I have critique partners; we meet every two weeks. But that’s for after the writing is done.
Then, when the book is done and ready to be shown to readers, the author stops and looks around. The questions roll in.
How do I get the word out? Marketing, what’s that?
Because we tend to be shy, solitary creatures, putting ourselves out in the spotlight can be scary and hard (at least for me).
That’s why having support networks is so important. MFRW is there to answer any questions I have--even if I think I’m showing my blonde roots.
Not only that, but workshops galore. I admit to being a workshop whore. Yup, every month, I’m signed up for at least a couple. Hey, I love to learn and it can only make me a better writer, right?
With the MFRW group, workshops are informative, and best of all, Free. Woot.
The group as a whole is made of the shy people like me, sharing how they’ve gotten themselves out there in front of readers, as well as the gregarious authors that I can learn from and try to be like.
Besides the help in learning how to get word of your book out there, this group is made of wonderful, helpful and caring people.
And for me, it’s important to have that when I stick my head out of my writing cave. It lets me know that really, I’m not alone.

And here's an excerpt from Bloodstorm:

When duty forces a shaman to stop a vampire from her revenge, love doesn’t just burn... it bites.

For two hundred years, Niki DeVeraux has been tracking the monster who murdered her family and made her a vampire. She finally catches up to him only to face more than she bargained for in a too-sexy sheriff who makes her remember she’s still a woman. With duties as Keeper of the peace and Sheriff, Shane Spencer must protect humanity and stop the friction between the local Arcaine races before it turns into an all out blood war.

When wolves start turning up dead, the tension between the races grows and suspicion falls on Niki. Shane knows she’s not to blame, and it has nothing to do with the primal urges she stirs within him. Working together, they must stop the hostilities from going over the edge. Trouble is, the desires raging between them might prove more dangerous than the surrounding threats.

Get to Know Amber:

One of those rare breeds, Amber Kallyn is an Arizona native who can trace her family's history through six generations in the state. She lives with her sexy husband, and their four very active children. Included in the menagerie are two cats (though there's always room for more) and two dogs. We won't count all the fish.

Amber loves the paranormal, from dragons to werewolves to vampires. She's currently at work on her next book, probably running around the house acting out a fight scene with her collection of swords and daggers. Or maybe, wishing she had claws to practice the other fight scenes.

A voracious lover of the written word, Amber found at an early age that she could read fast. Really fast. She devours novels by the day, novellas by the hour, and is always looking to get her hands on more.

Hi Amber,
I'm a member of the MFRW and what can a writer with very little time add to this summer camp? BTW, I'm also a class whore. Currently, I'm taking one of Facebook and how to sell more books. I'll let you know how that goes.

The industry is changing faster than anyone can keep up with! I heard Steve Berry speak last night and he noted that 70% (that's right, 70%) of his book sales are digital. It means writers have to link to readers digitally as well.

Good morning, Vicki.

I was at a writers conference this past weekend, and finding readers was a big topic. The two things I took away from it were 1) work on getting people to sign up for your newsletter (and actualy send it regularly) and 2) find other authors for a cross-promo team and work together.

Morning, Alisha.

Thanks for having me over!

Hey Sylvia,

LOL, I'm a workshop whore myself. I'm currently taking *blushes* 3, of which I don't have time for. The great thing is being able to go back when I have time and read all the lessons then :)

Hi Liese,

And that's only the tip of the changing ice burg, but definitely the driving force.

Hi Amber and Welcome to the Plotting Princesses blog.

MFRW sounds like a wonderful group, helping authors spread the word and teaching. So important to teach and give back what's been given to us.

I'll definitely be checking out MFRW Summer Camp. Thanks.

Any suggestions/tips/tidbits about promoting and marketing you'd like to share here, please feel free. We can always use the extra advice. :-)

Hi Savannah,

I love the feeling of family so prevalent with other writers and this group :)

Amber Kallyn said...

Hi Kathy, thanks for having me over.

The #1 promo tip I'd suggest is to join groups like MFRW. Everyone shares what works/doesn't for them, so others can try it or tweak it and see if it works for them too :)
