Cupid Comes Calling: Favorite Romantic Era

Happy Valentine’s Day! Welcome to the final day of the Plotting Princess Valentine’s Day blog. I hope you’ve had fun reading all the romantic tales and commenting to get your name in the drawing for that $200 Visa gift card!

WWII is a wonderfully romantic era for me, perhaps because as it ended my parents met and fell in love.
It all started in a small town south of Dallas, when the Yates family rented a house down the road from the Hunts, my mom’s family. Often, they would drop by the Hunt farm and visit. I don’t know for sure, but my theory is that those visits became more frequent once they got a taste of my grandmother’s homemade biscuits, pies and cakes. Anyway, at the beginning of the war, my mom, Syble Hunt, was still in school and the youngest Yates son, Bobby, developed a boyhood crush on her. Bobby would save her a seat on the school bus each day. He kept telling Syble that she should meet Duane, his oldest brother who was a tail gunner on a B-17. Bobby was a sweet kid, but she didn’t pay much attention.
So when the war ended and Duane returned to Texas, his dad and kid brother started in with similar stories. “You should meet Syble Hunt. She’s pretty and smart and she can really cook!” Like Syble, Duane didn’t give the stories much credence. He’d bought a used hot rod convertible and began settling back into civilian life, enjoying his freedom. He’d earned the title of jitterbug king overseas and taught dance for awhile in Dallas.

.
I know, get to the story. So one Friday afternoon Duane and Bobby were in town sitting on the hood of the hot rod convertible enjoying a soda. The Interurban (street car) pulled in from Dallas and the classiest girl Duane had ever laid eyes on stepped off. As he watched her walk across and get into her dad’s car, he asked his younger brother, “Who is that?”
Bobby punched him in the shoulder. “That’s the girl we’ve been telling you about!”
Duane grinned that sideways grin of his, “I think I’ll marry her.”

It took Dad two years to convince Mom to marry him, but as they say, the rest is history.
How about you? Is there a particular era that you find romantic? Please leave a comment and in addition to the drawing for the $200 Visa gift card, I'll give one commenter an ecopy of my latest release, Undercover Heart.

My father was a WWII vet and my parents met right after the war (married 1948)! I love that era .... oh, and I know what the interurban was, I lived in the little town of Italy for a while and you could still see the tracks ... especially in the still brick surfaced areas.

Very sweet and I'm sure the cooking helped..my favorite era is the 60's..the cars were flashy, sexy, and fast..the clothes were so fun and flirty..it seemed like such a happier time..where people were just nicer to be around and dating was special

Oh, Bailey! Italy is where my mom got off the Interurban. Her family lived just south of Frost. My dad's family lived in Frost by that time. How cool! I still have family there.

Karla, I loved the 60s too. I had lots of psychedelic clothes and go-go boots. Love beads and peace signs.

Hi Rita. Thanks all for stopping by.

I really enjoyed this post. My uncle was a vet and although he is not with us anymore he was a LOVER at heart.

What a great story. Favorite era is the 60's. Things were fun and fresh then. Times were more laid back then.

Hi Mayas. Same with my dad. Maybe it was something about those vets.

Thanks, Sylvia.

Jean, ahhh, another 60s gal.

Barb, yep. He was persistent, but in all honesty, I don't think it took too much convincing.

Ahh, Kimberly. I'm a romantic also. Can't help myself.

I don't know if I have a favorite era. I love to read it all. If I can read about real romance and true love, it doesn't matter when it took place.

Not sure if I have a favorite era. I love reading how we met stories no matter the decade.

I don't have a particular time that I think of as being romantic. I think of anything in the past as romantic, but the present not so much.

Hi Latochia,

I used to read all eras also. I wish I just had more time to read these days.

Jennifer and Kim,

Thanks for stopping by today.

Love the story and especially the old pictures! I can visualize him sitting on his car and seeing her for the first time. Love this story!
I think this time period is especially romantic. Guys were just in a different class back then.
