Sweethearts Candy

My fondest memories of Valentine's Day are from elementary school. Of course, I'm old enough to remember Valentine's Day parties and the little valentines you gave to your classmates. I have fond memories of going through my valentines to see what everyone wrote on the cards, looking for that special person in your class. Every year someone would give you a little box of Sweethearts, the heart-shaped candies with sayings on them. I remember putting a Kiss Me heart on the desk of a little boy that I liked in the third grade. He was my first boyfriend until Susan, that naughty temptress, lured him away.

For fun, I thought I would see if I could find some history on how these candies were created. Wikipedia had a full page devoted to these cute little candies. They began in 1847 when Oliver Chase invented a machine that cut lozenges from wafer candy. He built a candy factory and his brother, Daniel made a stamp that you could press into the candy with different sayings. At that time, the candies were made for weddings and had some unique sayings. The heart-shaped candies that we know didn't get their start until 1901. Every year, Necco produces over 100,000 pounds of hearts each day from February through mid January. In 1990, the company that owns the candies updated the sayings.

Curious to see what the updated sayings were, I bought a bag of Sweethearts. Now, I have an extremely busy life, but I decided I would write down all the sayings in that bag of candy. There were 56 different sayings, which I'm not going to bore you with here, but I'll give you the ones that I don't remember and thought were unique. So here they are: Game on, Reach 4 It, Race Me, Friend Me, Let's Ride, Hey Babe, Time 2 Dance, Shake It, UR Hot, UR It, Wink Wink, Soul Mate and Text Me! Glad to see the candy makers are keeping up with the times, though Race Me is kind of strange? Race me to the bedroom?

Receiving a Valentine is always fun and every year my husband gives me a sweet card, candy and or flowers. This day we all celebrate love with our significant others, our children and family. As Romance Readers and Writers, this day is made just for us and this year I decided to participate in a Valentine's Day anthology.

What if you grew up in a town called Cupid, Texas and you ran away when you were eighteen to keep the boy you love, from making the colossal mistake of marrying you? Now ten years later you're returning for your best-friend's wedding and will see him for the first time. Game on, in Cupid, Texas, where Wink Wink, UR Hot meets Soul Mate.

So what is your most memorable Valentine's Day? Was it flowers, candy or just a sweet card from the man who makes you smile and warms your heart?

  1. Hi, Sylvia! What a fun topic. I loved getting those candies. My favorite memory is a box I decorated for Valentine's day in 4th grade. It is covered with shiny white wrapping paper and a frilly red bow with a doily. I used it in my story "I Believe." The heroine had stored old letters and mementos in it.

    Fun post!

  2. I love your Race Me to the bedroom! LOL!
My hubby was quite the poet when we were courting. Valentine's Day meant a sonnet that made me weak in the knees. I have them all in a box, safely out of the kids reach ;)

  3. Vicki,
Wasn't grade school fun? I remember a big envelope with a heart made of construction paper. That is so cool that you used that box in your story. Good job.

  4. Sasha,
My husband is kind of a poet, though he hasn't done sonnets that I have to hide from the kids. But usually they make me cry becuase he's so sweet. Love that man.

  5. I also used the poem I wrote for him as the chant in "I Believe."

Oops, no one knew that. hehehe.

  6. Great trip down memory lane and those Valentine's days and making the little boxes to put the Valentines in...what fun. My dad always gave me a Snoopy card...I think that's my fondest memory of VDay...Now I always try to find Snoopy cards to send him.

  7. Tess,
Thanks for coming by and going down memory lane with us. Dad's are pretty special to little girls and what a neat thing to do now that you're grown.

  8. I'm with you - Race on seems weird and there's just no real romance for me in 'text me' - LOL.

I swear - I think with every generation the joy of romance slips further and further away.

I never had a beau (lol how's that for old fashioned) on valentines in all my years - lol - but for me the sweetest memories aren't from valentines day but the times I'd come home and for no good reason find a vase with my favorite flower - a yellow rose.

  9. oh - well - I should mention the flower would be from my hubby- LOL.

Did manage to get one of those eventually- LOL

  10. Hi Chris,
I didn't date much in high school and then my first husband thought flowers were a waste of money. You know it's the little things that men do that make you feel good. I really liked that commercial on the Super Bowl when the lady is getting dressed and you see a vase of flowers. She turns to the camera and says Valentines day is easy, you give and you receive. It was simple and effective.

Glad to see you Chris. We miss you!

  11. Oh my gosh! I just visited a blog and you just described what I was trying to say about my elementary days setting the pace and bar for every Valentine's Day since, regardless of those days (before I met my hubby and soul-mate) where most times it was hard to compare.

    This was fun...thank you guys!

  12. Fun post, Sylvia. My favorite memory is the first hert-shaped box of chocolates I received from a boy when I was in 7th grade. To say I was astonished is an understatement! Now my sweet husband always finds something special to give me and then takes me out to dinner.

  13. Hi Karen,
Glad you enjoyed the blog. I always enjoyed those little heart shaped candies, but I have to say they didn't hold the same appeal when I bought the bag this year. Elementary school was such a fun time.

  14. Hi Caroline,
Glad to see you stop by. I'm jealous I don't think I received my first box of chocolates until high school. Never once during my first marriage and now my hubby always gives me flowers, chocolate and we go out to dinner. We're lucky that we have such caring men.

  15. Hi Sylvia,
Great topic! I learned something about those little hearts. I used to love to get the hearts, but I really don't like the way they taste

Valentine's Day memory: When we first got married my hubby gave me gold earrings with rubies. On the sides are little cut out hearts and above the hearts the word "Love" is written. Good hubby!

  16. Ah those school days when you worked so hard making a shoe box decorative and pretty to hold all your valentines in.

It was always fun to get those little boxes of Sweethearts Candy, made you feel special. I used to take a chocolate kiss to the envelop of each valentine that I gave in class, because getting chocolate was special, and who doesn't like to get a kiss?

Great post, Sylvia, brings back fond memories.
