The Year of Time
For the past few years, it seems like I’ve had a focus. In 2006, we moved from Idaho to Illinois, so it was the year of change. 2007, the year of cancer. Which made 2008, the year of fun.
This year, I’m scheduled to present three different sessions on time management for writers or how to find that 25th hour in the day. So, I’m taking the hint. 2013 is the year of time.
Does't thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that is the stuff life is made of. –Ben Franklin.
I’m taking a step backward for January and looking at my commitments and schedule for the year. What do I want to do? And how much time do I have available to dedicate to that goal?
Sounds like resolutions.
And I guess, it kind of is. But I’m talking more about allocating resources. Your money, your talents and your time are all resources that are yours to spend wisely or foolishly.
I’m a ‘do everything once’ kind of gal. And sometimes, okay, most times, I over commit thinking, sure, I can get all this done and clean the house and work a full time job and still sleep 7-8 hours. But setting too high of a benchmark only leaves one grumpy and unfulfilled. I also tend to give up if I don’t see a satisfactory way out. Setting a benchmark just out of your reach makes you stretch.
I want to stretch this year.
This year you’ll see me in a few new places. I’m speaking at the NOLA conference in Shreveport in March. (So excited, my first trip into Louisiana, ever.)
And I’ll be visiting a sister RWA chapter in Memphis in June. (Looking for a little bit of Elvis for my summer.)
The next month will find me in Atlanta at Nationals.
Corner me in the bar at one or more of these events and ask me how the year of time is going. Hopefully, I’ll have good news to report. And if not good news, great stories to tell.
Do you have a theme for 2013? One thing you want to accomplish or celebrate?
The Bull Rider’s Manager –
Barb Carico’s all about business. Now that her best friend tied the knot with Barb’s new business partner, she’s busier than ever. Managing Jesse Sullivan’s career and
public persona can be a handful. Add in an aging mother who goes through home health nurses like candy, Barb’s hanging on the edge.
Her one salvation? Hunter Martin, prodigal son of Martin Family Dairy and, hopefully, Jesse’s next sponsor. After his brother’s death, Hunter's become an instant dad to his seven-year-old niece. For Hunter, the rodeo weekend with Barb is the perfect excuse to relax.
When their dinner turns into a quick trip to a Vegas wedding chapel, both Barb and Hunter agree their nuptials were a mistake Barb doesn't know anything about being a wife or mother but she needs one favor. A favor she'll trade her lifestyle, independence, and even risk her heart to make come true.
Lynn Cahoon is a contemporary romance author with a love of hot, sexy men, real and imagined. Her alpha heroes range from rogue witch hunters to modern cowboys. And her heroines all have one thing in common, their strong need for independence. Or at least that’s what they think they want. She blogs at her website, A Fairy Tale Life.

Good Morning, Lynn and welcome to Plotting Princesses. I see you wear a tiara well!
Yum, your book sounds yummy. I actually know a few real life bull riders. One is now retired but occasionally judges them now. Hubby and I are season tickets holders to the Mesquite Rodeo.
Well, my 2012 was a year of travels, but ended on a cancer note. Free of the beast now, I intend to get several books self published thus year. Oh and we're heading back Alaska in May.
Those are my 2013 goals.
This is the year of travel. I'm going to RT in May, Romcon in June, Nationals in July and sometime (no set date yet) we're going to Nova Scotia with family. Then in the fall I hope to attend my first Ninc conference. God willing, I intend to put out three books this year. So I have a really busy schedule and as always I've probably over booked myself.
Great to have you Lynn and I will look for you in the bar at Nationals.
Hi Lynn. Managing time is always a problem for me. Like you, I tend to overcommit to too many things and there just aren't enough hours in the day.
I've promited to make my writing more of a priority this year. I WILL get 3 books published this year. I'll also be at Dreamin' in Dallas in March and ROMCON in June.
Good luck on keeping all your time goals.
A year of travel both personally and professionally. Your books sounds great. Good luck.
Hi, Lynn: goals: release story collection/done; sell story/done; sell Christmas story/working on it.
And I have a secret project due in September that has nothing to do with writing.
I'm attending a couple of conferences too.
Thanks for bing on the PP.
Goal? With the year beginning with neck surgery and complications, 2013 can only get better, right?!
My goal is still to work hard at expanding awareness of Workshops with MM to help even more writers reach their goal of publication.
Thanks for a great article, Lynn.
MM
Hi Phyllis - sorry, the day job kept me long. Congrats on being free of the big c. Alaska sounds great.
Sylvia - I wish I could go to RT, it's so close! But I'll see you in Atlanta.
Kathy - glad it's just not me about the over committing problem. Dreamin' in Dallas looks fun.
Marian, I love travel.
Hi Vicki! Love the secret project - now I want to know. :)
MM- ouch. Yes, 2013 will get better. But take care of yourself.
Lynn,
Great article and great advice.
