In San
Fernando Dreams, a disillusioned movie starlet finds herself falling in love
with a twin—but which one?
Excerpt from San Fernando Dreams:
Douglyss checked out
the menu. It was loaded with the kind of food no one in L.A. ate anymore:
cheeseburgers, tuna melts, club sandwiches, beef au jus and deep-fried breaded mushrooms. Easy to see why no one comes here.
“Hello,” said a voice
above her. Douglyss jumped. “Aren’t you that pretty girl from that movie about
glasses?”
Douglyss looked up to
see the handsomest young man she had ever seen. Haloed in light from the front
window, he was slim and tall, his chiseled jaw accentuated by a rugged layer of
scruff that matched his unkempt heather brown hair. He extended his hand to
her. “Branagh.” said Larry.
I knew you were hot, but not this hot. Looking into Larry’s
ocean-blue eyes, she didn’t notice his hand. Instead, she shimmied to the end
of the bench.
“Please,” Larry said,
“that’s not necessary.” He sat on the opposing bench and smiled.
Douglyss didn’t see his
smile, though; she still focused on his eyes. Intense, but gentle, too. Deep and…dreamy. She shook herself out of
it. “Dreamy?” WTF?
“This is
an…interesting…place,” Douglyss said. Oh,
my god, what a stupid-ass thing to say. Why is my brain turning into mashed
potatoes and gravy?
Larry looked around.
“It’s the most unpretentious place I know of.” He looked her in the eye.
“So…real.”

Hi DC and Welcome to the Plotting Princesses. Very interesting interview, especially the polar fleeces. Right about now we here in Texas wish we had a collection of those, since the weather can't decide if it wants to be hot or cold. LOL
Intriguing excerpt which has my head spinning with all the potential. Great job.
Great cover. Thanks for sharing with us! I wish you all the best!
Hi, DC and welcome. Polar fleeces--really? I guess in the far northern regions, you need those. Is a thawing in sight?
Welcome, DC. Loved the excerpt. Curious about why you mentioned his hand. guess I;ll have to go download the book to fine out!!
"Flourless chocolate cake with raspberry sauce" -- sounds yummy. Can you share the recipe?
Thanks, everyone.
Kathy and Vicki--I was in Dallas last month, and it was 80 degrees on three straight days! I sat on my brother-in-law's deck and worked on my WIP, and returned to Wisconsin with a tan. It was 11 when I got off the plane in Milwaukee, so I was glad I had my heather green fleece on--and my parka waiting in the trunk of my car. And, yes, Vicki, it's been warm enough for me to ride my bike on the bluffs of Lake Michigan the past three days--as long as I wear the olive fleece with black arm stripes that I use only for bike riding when it's below 50.
Melissa--Thanks for commenting on the cover. I couldn't believe how much that model looked like Douglyss when I saw her on Shutterstock. (BTW, Taylor Momsen of the band The Pretty Reckless also looks a lot like Douglyss.)
Liz--In this scene Larry, pretending to be his movie-star brother Branagh--extends his hands to shake hands with Douglyss. Not really a spoiler alert--another physical feature of Larry's mentioned in the scene turns out to be a very big deal in the plot.
And here's the recipe:
8 tablespoons unsalted butter
8 ounces semisweet chocolate
5 large eggs, room temp, separated
3⁄4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
1⁄2 teaspoon salt
Preheat oven to 350.
Grease 9" springform pan with 1 tablespoons of butter, dust with flour.
In metal bowl over double boiler, melt remaining butter and chocolate, remove from heat
Use mixer to beat yolks together with sugar and vanilla.
Beat whites and salt together until stiff.
Fold chocolate mixture into yolk mixture a little at a time.
Fold in egg whites.
Pour into springform pan.
Bake 40 minutes until spongy.
Remove from oven, remove springform, cool completely.
For the sauce, we usually just mix raspberries with a little water and boil them until they're a thick sauce. You can add a little sugar, too, or use canned sauce or pie filling, or use the raspberries whole and uncooked.
(Note: In my household, I cook food, Mary Jo bakes. I hate having to use measuring cups and spoons; she needs to use every item in our kitchen to make dinner for two people.)
Hey, Dave! You should have hollered and we could have treated you to lunch!
I'm saving the recipe.
I guess I didn't know I had so many friends in Dallas! I'll be back.
