SUPERSTITIONS: ARE YOU A BELIEVER? by Kathy Ivan

I grew up in South Florida and spent many a happy vacation going to the beach and/or visiting with family and friends along the Florida Keys and Key West.  Imagine my surprise when I found out that after a day combing the shore for spectacular seashells that I wasn't allowed to bring them inside the house.

Why?  Because it's bad luck to have real shells in your house.  Bet you didn't know that (unless you were brought up by a very superstitious grandmother and mother.)

Most of you know the superstitions or omens which are fairly common.
Don't walk under a ladder.  A black cat crossing in front of you is bad luck.  Finding a 4-leaf clover is good luck.  Always hang a horseshoe pointing up, so the good luck doesn't run out.

But those are only the beginning.  Here are a few you may or may not have heard of:

·      It's bad luck to put your shoes on top of the bed.
·      Never let someone sweep under your feet, or you'll never get married.
·      Putting your purse on the floor is considered bad luck.
·      A bird in the house means a death in the family.
·      If the palm of your right hand itches, it means you'll unexpectedly receive money.  But, if the palm of your left hand itches, it means you're going to spend money you weren't planning to spend.
·      If the bottom of your foot itches, you're going to take a trip.
·      Don't open an umbrella in the house, its bad luck.
·      Never kill a spider inside the house, again bad luck.

Seems like a lot of superstitions point toward bad luck, although some predict good fortune.  So, how do you feel about superstitions?  Do you believe in omens or have a ritual that you do, hoping for good things.  Share it with us in the comments.

And just because football has started, and my team won on Saturday, here's a little something to give you a hint my favorite team.

Hi Kathy, love this post. My grandmother had a ton of them:

If your nose itches, somebody's coming.

If a pregnant woman was scared by something, the baby would look like what scared the mom. I was a long skinny baby and according to her that was because my mom was sitting on the side of the lake while my dad fished and a snake scared her. Ha. Wonder why I'm short and thick these days.

Love these Pam. I always heard the one if your nose itches, you're going to kiss a fool! LOL Plus, short and thick pretty much describes me these days, too!

Oh, an my other grandmother claimed that the first night you slept in a new bedroom, you were to name the corners. Then the corner you woke up facing was the man you were going to marry. Ha.

Hi Kathy I'm Cuban American from South Florida too. And yes that's exactly how I grew up same superstitions. But now that I'm older and had 8 children of my own. I have to say that alot of what our family said is true. Theres a reason these things have been around along time. I have had several instances where one of my kids would bring in the house sea shells and I thought let them keep it and play. And i kid you I noticed had major issues in the home even filed for divorce. I said one day could it really be the damn shell I threw it out. And I swear just like that without having said a word to my husband things calmed and my divorce was put on hold. I noticed certain things they did tell us are so real from just experience several times. Thanks for the post. I do not feel like I'm the only one that experienced this stuff.

This that people will be good at suggests assessing lies told via emotional cues but bad at detecting lies told via behavioral cues...
