Vicki Batman ~ Cupid Comes Calling: Not That Guy!

Cupid Comes Calling: Not that Guy!

I was supposed to go to see the new Bond flick with a friend, only he'd had a little too much fun-in-the-sun. This I found out when I checked in with him on what time we wanted to go for the show. His doorbell rang as I was about to leave. My friend answered and there stood…his co-worker, a tall, thin, dark-headed young man. In a flannel shirt.  In May.  After we were introduced, the co-worker said, "Sorry, I'm interrupting." I said, "No, I was just leaving."

I explained about the movie, and all of the sudden, my friend said, "You take her." I was mortified, and said, "Our friend has had too much fun today. Ignore him." The co-worker said, "I'll go." Before I knew it, all was arranged.

I kept thinking I was being nice. And I was. I paid for my own ticket, did most of the talking. Afterwards, the co-worker dropped me off in my apartment's parking lot. Ooookkaaayyy. A nice escort to my door would have been kind, but no.

Fast forward to six weeks later to my roommate's surprise birthday party by the pool…

That afternoon, the co-worker phoned and asked me out. I declined and invited him to the party. Pretty typical of me as I invited everyone to the party. In the middle of celebrating, I looked up and spied him (wearing a sweater. In July.) walking toward our group. Another friend noticed and asked about him. I said, "Oh that's Charlie's friend." I greeted him and made introductions.

Throughout the evening, three people told me they liked him, and I should date him. I was like really? But began to look at him through different eyes.

He kept coming back. And I kept saying yes. And finally on April Fool's Day, he proposed.

I made him ask me again on April 2—just to be sure.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Ummm, no sweetie. lol But this shows that sometimes what you're looking for is standing right in front of you ... in plaid. Thanks for sharing!

Fun story, Vicki. I dated a guy once who wore a cream colored turtle neck on our date in July. When I asked him about it, his answer was, "Well, I thought it looked good with my blond hair." And it did, however I didn't marry him.

My sweetie proposed on Easter Sunday in 2006. I worked all day and came home to an egg hunt in the back yard. Each egg had a clue to where the next was hidden and when I opened the last one I turned around and he had a ring. Email is penguinlady721@gmail.com

Good morning! Thanks for sharing your bits of stories too.

You are so right, Bailey. That's what my friends pointed out. hehehe

Oh, Pam, I can't believe he said that. I think I would have died laughing. Hugs.

Hi, Jennifer! I love how creative your honey was. Great stuff!

Thank you, Barb. I still tease him about the sweater, and the mound of dirty laundry.... lol

Hi, Jean. What a romantic!

Gotta love a persistent guy (unless he's a stalker, of course). Fun story, Vicki. Congrats on the launch of Bug Stuff!

Love strikes at odd times, but that was a cute story. I have a similar story with yours, there was a span of two years from the first time I met my DH, not very impressed with him.

Two years later with different circumstances and getting to know him better, it was like being swept off my feet. We've been married for 22 years.

Hi, Michelle! It's a pretty funny story. There's even more about the guy who introduced us... lol

Hi, Sally! He truly was persistent. Still is a pill. lol

Hi, Armenia! I had just about given up on the whole dating process when he walked in. Little did I know when you least expect it...

Hi, Rita! How adorable! I can so totally envision this too and it is so romantic. Thanks for posting.

My favorite part was how you made him ask you again on April 2. So funny.

Hi, BN! I'm crossing fingers for you if that is what you want. HUgs!

Hi, Debbie! That was pretty funny and you know what? I like celebrating that day even more than our anniversary. :)

Desperately romantic stuff here. My hubby prposed to me at 2am in our bathroom whilst I was sitting on the loo brushing my teeth, my mouth full of toothpaste....I kid you not but do you know what it was perfect for us. We were room mates and best friends before we became more. Five years married Dec 12th and two gorgeous little boys after we still can't get enough of each other. We love each other tremendously. Hi, Nicole! I love the romance of this too. At 2 am., your sweetie thought of proposing. Add the fact you were roommates, then best friends... Ah love blossomed. What a great story!

Nicole McCurdy said...

Haha I think I was maybe being a tad sarcastic in saying it was romantic :-) but yes it's a story I sometimes cringe at telling when my friends are talking about beach walks and candle lit dinner proposals. But it got us to now and we're happy (touch wood) x

Vicki Batman, sassy writer said...

Hi, Nicole! Funny romantic--maybe? Being proposed to on April Fool's Day wasn't ideal, but hey, we have a funny story to tell, just like you do. And it is uniquely yours.

Nicole McCurdy said...

Very well put! Uniquely ours...I like that :-) Loved your story. I'm such a sucker for HEA's x

He didn't actually. We kind of just assumed it was a given. Dating, then planning a wedding just happened.

Hi, Mary! Your relationship just moved naturally and that's cool. Like Nicole and I have chatted about, uniquely yours. Honestly, the April Fool's thing drove me crazy! I don't really recommend it. lol

Great story, Vicki! I love 'how we met' stories!

Vicki Batman, sassy writer said...

Hi, Molly! I love that you stopped by and wish you had told a tale today. Happy writing!

Karilyn Bentley said...

Love how you guys met! Can't believe he wore a sweater in July. :) Great story!

Vicki Batman, sassy writer said...

Hi, Karilyn! I was pretty underwhelmed at the time. Even had sworn off dating because it had become a nightmare. So our "first" date wasn't really. Our "second" - nah. And I honestly can't remember some of it after. lolol

Lol..Sounds about right..I was always off on my relationships too..before my husband and I started dating I was trying to figure out how to date a coworker friend if his..and then got caught off guard by him instead..love is definitely it's own rule maker..Congrats on your long happy marriage <3

I also love a good love story. I'm not in a good place at the moment but I hope to be in the future. Never marry a friend thinking you won't find true love. Neither one of you will be happy and you'll miss out on a wonderful future. dogan@eatel.net

Vicki - I'm dying to know what the story was about the flannel shirt and sweater during warmer (?) months. ??? LOL!!

The Man took me to dinner downtown; we decided to walk out onto Fountain Square and lo & behold, he dropped to one knee and whipped out a ring! We then went on a horse buggy ride, which I don't even think I realized we were on -- I was in such shock, even though yes, I knew it was coming...

The biggest laugh we have? He had actually planned to propose the night before; we'd gone to the Festival of Lights at the local zoo (December lights). It was soooo cold and I remember standing by Swan Lake looking at all the lights and trying to snug close to him inside of his coat. He, however, was noticing that the stench from the Elephant House was rather pungent and he refused to propose to me with the memory of the Elephant House smell in his mind. To this day, he tells me that he thinks I wasn't really trying to get warm, that I was actually trying to search for the ring on him. HONESTLY - I'd had no idea LOL!!

Hi, everyone! I had a crash and burn last night (partied too hard with the launch??? Maybe, she says coyly)

Here's the truth about Handsome and the flannel shirt and the sweater: Several dates later, he took me to his apartment and I figured out why--he had a mountain of dirty laundry. lolol

Our Winner is---Alana!

Happy V-day!
