Birthday Wishes

Toooo meeee! I partied last Friday--thank you to all who so sweetly wrote me. Lol.
I love celebrating my birthday. It's the one day All About Moi. Presents, dinner, cards--nothing feels better. Right?

Definitely, there's nothing better than birthday cake and I'm pretty non-discriminatory. I love almost every kind of cake, especially the ones with lots of icing flowers and leaves. (I bet you're thinking get out the cholesterol medicine.)

Once upon a time, I had to have apple pie instead of the requisite cake. I know, I know, you're thinking pie? Pie rocks, too. At some point, I switched to pineapple upside-down cake. My mom made the best, and it's probably time to talk her into making one now. My current fav is vanilla with chocolate frosting.

The dilemma: the kids are grown and the hubby doesn't bake. Do you agree it feels weird to make your own birthday cake? Sometimes, I can *persuade* my oldest to make one for me as my gift from him. I've sat in my office and inhaled the aroma of baking cake, and once it had cooled, the scent of chocolate frosting found my nose. Mmmm, come to mama. If Number One fails to produce, sometimes, Handsome orders one. But it isn't the same.

There's another reason why cake is important. Like all of you, before I dive in and stuff my mouth…

I take the moment before blowing out the one (haha) candle, to mumble a wish.
I'll confess, for several years, I've wished, hoped, and prayed I'd sell my books. I would love-love-love to sell them. I've wished on stars, stuck notes in a wall, prayerfully prayed, etc. But I'm guessing someone hasn't been clued in on my wish.

Am I being selfish by wishing on myself?

Maybe. Sorta. Kinda. Darn.

But if I don't wish for myself, who will? (she whined).

My cake wishing became amended a few years back when Handsome had been diagnosed with cancer. All my focus zeroed in on his nuking the intruder and getting well. And when my birthday rolled around, that year's wish went to him. Certainly understandable.

Once he'd recovered, I began doing other wishes--one for his continued health. If my kids had concerns, I tossed them in on occasion, and added my sisters and their families, my parents, friends.

Sounds like I've matured. LOL

I'm thinking the time is right to be selfish again. And I have a very good reason--my book is out there (*scrubbing palms*), and maybe, juussst maybe, this one will take. J And feel free to add me to your wish list. Your good vibes are welcomed.

So, remember, when you are blowing out your (one) candle, I'm wishing for you.

Want to share? Tell me: what do you wish for?

Fun post! When i realized you could buy a cake mix and frosting for about a buck each, i started making them for afterschool snack. Yes, dangerous...but i also love that smell from the oven!

Honestly, I'd shoot someone if they gave me a pie for my b-day, but that is my opinion.

My wishes this year were selfish in nature...help me edit my wip, get that editor to fall in love with it, and let me see my book on the shelves. Oh yea, and keep the family safe while i'm not paying enough attention to them.

LOL, Amy! Did you know big time bakeries use a mix? And YEAH! a dangerous snack

I do freshen mine with butter and vanilla, though.

Thanks for posting and be sure to follow us!

It is absolutely okay to wish for yourself on your birthday. To always be wishing for someone else would make you a seriously codependent-people pleaser. That doesn't mean you can't wish them good will, though.

I say a prayer to St. Jude every night (patron saint of hopeless cases.) I include my entire family and anyone who needs prayers. At the end of every prayer, I ask for something for me. The last few weeks I've been praying for great reviews.

When my prayers are answered, I cut a check to St. Jude's Hospital. Besides making Marlo Thomas happy, I've contributed to a wonderful cause.

So, go ahead and wish for that big sale. I'll include you in my prayer to St Jude. And I am confident that will cost me a donation!!

Last year I got the pleasure of spending my birthday on a beach - writing - got to get dressed up for dinner (I love any excuse to dress up) and laughed all night with friends.

If I could make a wish it would be to spend every birthday on a sunny beach doing what I love with good friends.

as for dessert - I'm more of a cream pastry person - : ) - I'll take a good cream puff over a slice of cake any day - Or a good NY canoli (no chocolate chips!!!) or a real Boston Cream Pie - or- well - I think you get the idea!! LOL.

and I most certainly agree - no one else knows our hearts desires so we really are our own best advocates for what we want from life. So you have my permission to wish away!! lol. Then I want the first autographed copy of that book !!

Thank you for the permission, Liz. I never felt co-dependent people pleaser, just felt others had needs more than mine.

Hi, Addison: I DO know how much you love cake. I'll never forget our friend eating blue flowers and her teeth turned blue. Thank you for posting.

Hi, Chris! Thanks for the permission to wish away. I like spending birthdays the way I want too. Good friends really make a day the best ever. ox

You most definitely may wish upon those candles for yourself and that your dreams come true! For the last five years I've continued to wish myself free of cancer so that I can be a great mom for my kids, always adding a birthday thanks that I'm here to blow out the candles in the first place! I don't call that selfish. If something makes you happy, then you're a happier person for those around you, right?

Hi, Patti! And oh do I hope and wish for you to remain cancer free! I LOVE your 'tude: If something makes you happy, then you're a happier person for those around you.

I'm saving that nugget. Thank you for sharing.

Hi, Vicki

Birthday wishes shouldn't be considered selfish at all. After all, it's your 1 day a year to wish for something special and personal without saying it out loud. A totally different thing than praying, hoping, pleading, cajoling, etc.

This post got me thinking. I haven't really made a birthday wish in a very long time, especially since I don't have birthday cake very often. (Not going there, miss sweets way, way too much!)

If I was going to wish, though, it would be for my next book to be published, and then the next, and then the next. LOL

Glad you're birthday was special. Spending it with friends who love you makes it a better experience all around.

Hi, Kathy! Missing cake would be no fun in my book, but I understand why. There's still the candle part and that's for wishing :) And yes, it is better with friend and loved ones.

Hey Vicki,
Glad to hear that the birthday went well. I've never been a big cake person, but every year for my hubbies birthday, I make him an Applie Pie. He loves it. As for birthday wishes...all your life you've probably wished for things for the hubby and kids. Sometimes its just time to think of what we want. So wish away for that next sale. The way you've been burning up the keys lately, the big one can't be far off.

Here's to a wonderful year of many more sales!

Liz, St Jude Children's Hospital is my favorite charity and I love your idea of a prayer to St Jude each night. A lot of my family fits right in there with the hopeless causes.

The older I get, the more I want my birthdays to be spent doing something I enjoy. I don't need gifts, just time away, having fun and relaxing. Last year for Christmas, Hubby gave me a certificate that said "One day of rest doing whatever I wanted to do." I loved that gift.

Many happy wishes, Vicki! Sorry I'm getting in here late. Now I have a BD tradition of blowing out the flame on my cafe brulee (sorry about the lack of accents...silly blogger).

Joelle

Prepare espresso with premium-grade arabica beans in a long espresso cup. Hold a large spoon containing 1 lump of sugar and 1 tbsp of brandy over each cup and light the brandy. Pour into the coffee when the flames begin to die down and serve with creme brulee.

Cheers!

Hi, Sylvia. I love your husband's gift! I agree, that kind is the best. I spent the day with a friend having lunch and a bit of shopping. Loved, loved, loved it.

Hi, Jodi/Joelle. Thank you for stopping by. Creme brulee (without accents) is delicious and worked as cake for my son on his birthday.

Hi Vicki,
Happy Belated Birthday! I don't think there is anything wrong with wishing on yourself for your birthday. I just wish that I don't spit on the cake when I blow out the candles. :)

My hubby usually makes cake, although we don't make it for birthdays all that often. If you make cake from scratch, make sure I'm not anywhere near. I'll eat the whole thing! :)

Hi, Karilyn. No spitting is hilarious. And I'm with you on cake from scratch or any cake. Thanks for posting.
