Stuck in a rut?
Is too much of a good thing bad?
On the way home from Mahjong, I realized I'd eaten some chocolate and couldn't even remember what it tasted like. Yikes!
At a visit to the wine country, I did some tastings and realized none of it tickled my palate.
I would read romance after romance and now, am reading more mysteries.
I have been known to consume vast quantities of Virginia peanuts. Nope. Not any more.
So what's going on? I haven't a clue. It's sorta like the day when you gave up eating
Maybe I am changing. Maybe I've reached a certain age. LOL. Certainly my palate is changing.
Or am I stuck in a rut? And we all know shaking our ruts is what we do to grow.
Our lives should be full of spice and sweetness. We need to Go. Do. Live. Be adventurous.
Have you seen the movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty? Walter is a negative asset manager for Life magazine. And even though the magazine shows us an incredible world, Walter's is pretty humdrum. It's sad really and we feel sorry for him. No spice and no sweetness and though he harbors a small desire, he doesn't act on it until a missing negative sends a series of events in motion. Life magazine has a philosophy of: To see things thousands of miles away, things hidden behind walls and within rooms, things dangerous to come to, to draw closer, to see and be amazed and to feel that is the purpose of life.
Are we amazed by the incredible world around us? By the caterpillar crossing the sidewalk to the Palo Duro Canyon? By the art people create and by the art a chef cooks?
Go. Do. Live your life adventure.
What is on your bucket list?

You've actually hit on two things- the law of diminishing returns (yes my degree is in economics-lol) and my more favorite topic- the bucket list.
My bucket list is all related to the gypsy in me - :) -
I want to see things like Great Wall of China, Greek Islands, the real Timbuktu - lol.
Actually now that I think about it - I'd better live to be 100 because this is one dang long list!! lol
Hi, Chris: In a way, diminishing returns. But I think we change and we should change or risk becoming stuck. BTW, Greek isles are gorgeous. And #2 stuck out in China amongst the Chinese. LOL
Ah, yes, Vicki, one should ENJOY LIFE cause it's the only one you have. I believe I have an attitude of gratitude and just living here amongst wonderful human beings (though they don't get much press) and my glorious family makes me happy.
Bucket list? I want to touch an elephant, i.e. up close and personal, before I croak!
Hi, Patti! I've touched an elephant. Amazing. But then, touching all animals are, except for creepy things like snakes. Ick.
And I think we forget even the littlest things are quite joyful. Thanks for visiting.
Enjoyed your post, Vicki. I would love to visit Scotland and Ireland. Did you know that 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was played by Danny Kaye in 1947 with Virginia Mayo and Boris Karloff? Loved that movie, have to see the remake.
Great post Vicki! I guess I'm weird. I love my life right now, but am so darn busy and ready for it to slow down. I'm also dealing with aging parent issues, but even that I'm about to get resolved.
We watched the movie last weekend and I didn't really enjoy it. I liked the character arc, but I didn't like Walter when the movie began. He was such a wimp. By the end of the movie he was better.
As for my bucket list...I guess I haven't made one. I want to go to Ireland, Scotland, Italy and England, but really I just want to retire to my little place in Colorado and gaze at the mountains as it snows.
But you made a really good point...I think as we age, we evolve and change. Hopefully for the better.
Hi, Rose! Now that I can wear Uggs and keep my feet warm, I'll go with you. LOL
I know about the Danny Kaye version and surprisingly, have not seen it. Thanks for stopping.
Hi, Sylvia! I think that was the point of the movie. He looked and dressed like a wimp and evolved as he embraced the adventure he was on. So look at it through those eyes. Otherwise, if he had been a hot-shot, good looking guy, what would have been his arc?
Great Post Vicki!
I'm all about living the adventure. I love white water rafting. Would like to do more of that. Different rivers. etc.
I miss my rock climbing days but it's time, as you say, to move on to something different. (In my case I'm too out of shape to climb).
So are you going to start writing mystery now?
Hi Vicki, it's good to take stock now and then, isn't it? Trouble for some of us is realising we're in that rut. Took me a while to notice the children weren't going to be in the house anyway, so if I wanted to go late night shopping, I could. Have been getting the hang of it though. Off to London next week on my own.
Hi, Kat! I love kayaking and want to raft down the Grand Canyon. I want to hike Machu Pichu. Lots of great things. As for writing mysteries, I have two in development and soon, shall have to revisit. And have several shorts not pubbed. :)
Hi, Anne! Off on your own to London? How cool! Have a great adventure. Isn't if funny how we center our world around children then one day have to revise! Have tons of fun.
Like Chris, my bucket list is mostly places to travel. Going to Alaska this summer for the first time. I'd like to say something on behalf of the rut: it's familiar and comfortable. I love to travel but I also love coming home. Frankly, I think you need both. You don't appreciate the rut until you go outside of it. One of my most favorite sounds in the world is hearing the passport agent say, when I reenter the United States from a venture abroad, "Welcome home."
Hi, Linda! I like your rut. I too like coming home. I like my comfy bed and my things. I resume my fun activities and carry on. Alaska is awesome. It's where the forest meets the sea. More than you can imagine. Have a wonderful trip.
I think we need to live everyday mindfully--being more aware of all the good things we have and appreciate the big stuff and the little stuff. We can enjoy the familiar as much as the new adventures. Drew a line through going to the Rose Parade entry on my bucket list. We went this year Jan 1, 2014. Fabulous!! One down, so I add another. I'll never get through them all, but fun trying!
Hi, J Q Rose! I like your style. I've always wanted to go to Macy's Thanksgiving parade. I'd have to have great weather as I am soooo not a cold weather person. But predicting that... LOL
Good to see you not in a rut. Hugs, vb
Loved this post! Loved, Loved, Loved it!
I used to teach yoga, and as such would also touch on some of the philosophies, my favorite was Zen. When I first spoke of Zen I asked my participants to see life as if it were the first time--the first time you saw your eleven year-old son, the first time you experienced spring, the first time you saw a budding rose. But part of Zen I never felt comfortable teaching was to see life as if it might be your last time seeing it. I think I was scared of this because of my own fear of death. But after experiencing quite a few blows from death, I now see how much more heartening looking at life as if it might end can be. It's such a beautiful life. Thank you for reminding me of that, Vicki!
Aloha Chris and Vicki.
I'm the same. They're all on my list too. My bucket list consists mostly of travel places. How cool. I've always wanted to see the real Timbuktu as well. :-). I wrote a blog a couple of weeks ago about bucket lists. So this blog Vicki called out to me too!! Thanks so much.
Sorry. Bloody google. Wouldn't let me skip to the end to finish!! Anyway. Enjoyed this blog thanks. So true!! :-). I definitely need to out some life/taste back in my life. Not even sure I can see over the top of the rut I'm currently in. Eeek. Lol.
Thanks. Aloha Meg. :-)
Aloha Anne. Good one. Enjoy London! Sounds fun. I know what you mean by realizing you can do things differently. Have fun. Aloha Meg. :-)
Hi, Lani: First-I adore yoga. Am going tonight. I have to have it.
Second-you are so right. After Handsome got cancer, my thinking changed to this might be the last time. It's not morbid, but cherishing.
Hi, Meg: and so excited to have you at the PP. Come Back! Isn't it cool that most of our bucket items include traveling? I have a few other items there that don't, but traveling is the majority. I'm planning a big trip for my next birthday because it is a biggie and want to share it with my boys and girl. Hugs!
Hey, Vicki. Interesting post. I Think having grands, gives you a new prospective on life. The little things seem so much bigger. Nothing thrills me like sitting on patio when the hummingbirds visit! I don't have a bucket list. We love to travel--mostly New England. If I had a list, it would be spend the summers on the coast of Maine out of our beastly summer heat! Just a small place with wifi. I could write a lot. :) I'll share.
Great post Vicki,
As for me, all three of my biggest life dreams came true this year- and yet I'm so damned busy that half of the time I forget to feel happy any more, instead wondering what else I can look forward to next. Maybe it's a "grass is always greener on the other side" type of philosophy- and you're right yhat we should enjoy what we've got!
I'm finding that life is always changing or I get bored. :) I need to find a new love or find a passion about every five years. It keeps me young! :)
Hi, Marsha! I was in the Hill Country recently and the hummingbirds were so busy at the feeders. It was so much fun to watch them and the cardinals too. The little things are important. I don't have grandkids, but remember how my boys looked at things differently. I especially remember dead animals. LOL
Hi, Christopher! Thank you so much for visiting the PP. Oh how I wish you could have shared your 3 biggies. VBG. The neatest part of life is there will always be something new around the next bend.
Great post! So true. We often fall into ruts. Getting out of them is fun, though. :)
My bucket list contains trips to Europe, the Galapagos Islands, Alaskan cruise, I'm sure there are others on there too!
I think to see England is high on my bucket list. Great post!
Right now, I'm stuck on the "do" part for some reason. :-D Thanks, Vicki, for your post!
Janice
I gave up sugar (candy, cakes, soda) for lent. My first Reeses peanut butter egg was heaven.
The other's were good, but the first, was amazing.
The only thing on my bucket list is to be able to knit socks (heel and all). Oh, and I'd like to get rid of fear, too. Thanks for a fun post, Vicki!
Hi, everyone! I've been away for a day and come back after the day my post was put up to find more people posted. Thank you. And thank you for sharing your bucket list. As for Ms. Cahoon, I just can't give up chocolate. lol
Truly lovely to see all the new people visit the PP. Hugs and come back soon.
Excellent post, Vicki! I think we should stop to see the beauty in nature every day. Go outside and watch the birds, the butterflies and lightning bugs. And yes, add things to our bucket list! I want to go to Hawaii, see more of Jamaica, travel Europe, and visit Egypt if it's safe enough. And eat lots of different foods too! I just read a book about a young man who had leukemia. He treasured every single breath of fresh air, every tiny bit of beauty in nature. If we knew we only had a short time left, I think it would really help us all focus. :)
